Should You Choose Subtitling, Voice Over, or Dubbing?

How to Choose the Right Multimedia Localization Approach

There are several factors to consider when making this decision, which may include the following:

Budget. The following are the least to most expensive options for video localization:

  • Subtitling is always a less expensive option as opposed to any form of dubbing or voice over. If your budget is tight, you may want to consider subtitles, at least to begin with.
  • Voice over will be the most cost effective method of dubbing as it will simply include audio translations over the top of the original audio track, which can be heard in the background. The number of voice talents required also plays into the cost for any voice-over or dubbing project. If you are able to limit the number of voices, the project will be less expensive.
  • Dubbing comes in various forms, with lip sync being the most expensive option. This includes a script recreation in order to match the audio translations to the original lip movements.
  • Video recreation includes full localization of the script, foreign actors, and reshooting, which is the most expensive but generally most acceptable and most effective method of bringing your message to an international audience.

Audience. Many parts of the world are accustomed to watching English subtitled movies; therefore, subtitling may be an acceptable and effective form of presenting your message. However, other parts of the world prefer dubbed adaptations where a subtitled version may feel awkward to them. Also, if the product is dubbed, how tolerant is the audience of an accent that may not be their own?

Critical message components. How much of your message is dependent on the audio and dialogue versus the visual parts of the video? For example, if your product is centered around professional development or training and you are helping teachers become better instructors, it may be important for the audience to watch for body language and other types of visual cues that could be missed through subtitles. Or if your product is fast moving or is meant to have a visual impact, some form of dubbing may be the correct way to go.
