Why AI Detectors Keep Flunking Non-Native English Writers
When educators turn to automated tools to screen student assignments for artificial intelligence, they expect objective technology. Yet recent research reveals a troubling flaw: Popular AI detectors can misclassify entirely human written work as machine generated, with non-native English writers disproportionately affected.When Stanford researchers tested seven popular AI detectors using essays submitted by international students taking the TOEFL exam, the results were striking. The detectors failed more than half of the human-written international essays, and one tool mistakenly classified nearly 98% of them as bot-written (Liang et al., 2023). By comparison, the same AI detection tools correctly identified more than 90% of essays written by native, English-speaking 8th-grade students as human written.
The difference may come down to how these tools measure predictability. Non-native English writers often choose clear, straightforward phrasing as they navigate a second language. AI detectors can misread that predictability as a sign of machine-generated text, penalizing writers for using direct language.

For school districts and educational programs, this blind spot creates a dangerous administrative hurdle.
